The Happiest Cults in the World

Ever thought that maybe you’d like to “drink the Kool-Aid” of a particular group that just seemed so darn happy? Maybe not, but you do wonder why they’re always so happy all the time. Don’t they know they’re crazy! Probably not. But here are a few of the cults that make all of us think maybe we’re the crazy ones.

Family International

In the ‘70’s, the term “free love” also applied to a lot of cult activity. Leaders and followers alike were encouraged to recruit people with sex, and women were especially considered “messengers” who could find followers by luring them with sex. In most accounts, these individuals were so happy to find new recruits (and have sex with them) that their numbers grew extremely high by the end of the ‘70’s. Many “Jesus babies” were born as a result, and these children were considered holy, and treated as such. Many people who came across a caravan of “Family” members often commented on how happy and kind everyone was – they never knew they were a cult (until the Family began to fall apart in the late ‘80’s).

Happy Science

This “religion,” started in 1986 in Japan, worships a supreme being called El Cantare. The leader, Ryuho Okawa conveniently talks to this supreme being, and all of the “guardian spirits” that are involved with political individuals (leaders, counselors, etc.). Okawa has created his own happiness manuals based on the four truths of Buddhism, the ten commandments, and various religious teachings. While many people believe the name of the religion is a misnomer, and really just a way for Okawa to counsel political figures “on his religion,” he does believe that following his path will make people happier.

Jesus People USA

With a name like that, how could you not be happy? “God’s Forever Family” gathered in the early ‘70’s, and still exists today, recruiting people on truly hippie terms, talking about God, love, and peace. The movement was originally a cross-country phenomenon, and caravans of hippies were often seen moving around from town to town before the group permanently set up shop in Chicago. They continue to share living space, money, and even spouses with the idea of “free love” and equality in the group being their reasoning. Many people have left, but those die-hard followers are some of the happiest people you’ll meet.

Scientology

Whle there have been a ton of people breaking ranks and telling their Scientology horror stories, the people who are still in the “religion” will tell you just how happy they are, and how much more healthy. Let’s consider some of their most famous evidence: Tom Cruise jumping up and down on Oprah’s couch when he said he was falling in love with Katie Holmes. Doesn’t get much happier than that. Also, many members experience great wealth gain shortly after joining the church, and many more use that money to recruit new followers. If money makes you happy, you should check out Scientology (just kidding, don’t!).

Hello free world! I’m Angela, I’m a thirty something living in “cult recovery” in Montana, and I’m here to share my story with the world. I was in a Christian-based cult for the first 20 years of my life, before literally escaping from the compound I had been raised in. While my story isn’t one of the ones broadcast all over the news, and I wasn’t interviewed on Oprah, I wanted to be a voice for people who were also in my shoes at one point (or still are).
